Kajal Misra Roy, daughter of Lt. Pt. Ramgopal Misra and grand daughter of Pt. Jailalji of Jaipur Gharana, combines and unifies the artisty of Jaipur and intellectual efficiency of Bengal. Kajal was initiated in kathak by her Lt. father at a very tender age and underwent vigorous training under him. Since the untimely demise of her father she was groomed into the finery of the art under the tutelage of her mother, Guru Susmita Misra. She has owned many laurels in dance, noteable among them are her performances at Swami Haridas Sangit Sammelan; National Centre of Performing Arts, Mumbai ; Tansen Music Conference, Kolkata; Kathak Prasang, Bhopal; Allahabad Music Conference; Kalka Bindadin Mahotsav; Sarat Chandrika Festival, etc. She has not only mesmerized the people in India with her dance, but has also left a mark in the International level, by giving her solo performances in countries like U.S.S.R , U.K., Germany, Holland, France, U.S.A etc. She has been one of the juries to select the National Scholarship presented by the Indian Government. She has also been selected as an external judge in the Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. Kajal has brought in tenderness to her style of dancing which is a new import in virile Jaipur Gharana. It has been her sustained effort to highlight the aesthetic sense, devotional aspect, expressional excellence and electrifying footwork of Jaipur style. She not only inherits but truly deserves the right to uphold this rich gharana. She is now busy in giving lessons of Kathak to the upcoming generations in Jailal Academy of Music, a prestigious dance institution in Kolkata, in the name of her celebrated grand father.
